The Hellenic Navy in order to be able to accomplish its mission in the best possible way, has at its disposal a number of different types of ships. The need for the existence of a variety of ships in the fleet is dictated by today's complexity of the war at sea.
The main types of ships of the Hellenic Navy are the following:
|
FRIGATES
They are ships armed with heavy and light armoury, as well as with suitable appliances, so that they can fight with other ship or aircraft, locate and destroy submarine, as well as bombing land targets.

FAST ATTACK CRAFT MISSILE
They are ships with small tonnage and high speed. Their armament consists of guided missiles, quick firing guns, and torpedoes. There are also smaller ships of this type, called "Fast Attack Crafts", that are mainly wooden ships, armed with torpedoes and light armament.

LANDING SHIPS
Landing Ships, which come in different varieties, are ships that have the capability to transport troops, tanks, vehicles, and materials, so that landing missions are executed successfully. Tank landing ships, vehicle landing ships and smaller ferries, as well as tankers, all belong in this category of ships. Also the navy possesses Air Cushion Landing Crafts of the "ZUBR" class, that can perform the same missions as the other landing crafts faster.

GUNBOAT SHIPS
The gunboat ships of the Hellenic Navy are boats of the size of Corvettes (575 tons) armed with guns of 40mm and 20mm, torpedoes (Mk 46 Mod5) as well as rails of mines for mine laying. They have Sonar detection capabilities as they are equipped with sonar, and can be used in a variety of missions.

MINESWEEPERS/MINE-LAYERS
Mine-layers are boats that lay mines in the sea, creating minefields. Minesweepers have precisely the opposite mission, that is to say they search for and locate mines laid by hostile ships or planes, in locations that prevent the movements of our own boats, and then neutralise them |
