The 353 Maritime Patrol Squadron (353 MPS ) was established in August 1969 at Elefsis AFB . Initially used twelve (12) secondhand HU-16B Albatross Maritime Patrol Aircrafts (MPA's) aquired from Norway .

After 23 years, at 1992, Hellenic Navy ( HN ) decided to aquire six (6) Ρ -3 Β ORION TACNAVMOD MPA's from USN. In February 1996 the construction of the support facilities for the new aircraft was completed . In May 1996 the first Hellenic Ρ -3 Β landed at Elefsis runway and up to February 1997 the delivery of all six aircraft had been completed.

The mission of the 353MPS is the overall preparation and readiness of the Squadron to undertake missions determined by the Hellenic Navy in time of peace or war
