The island of Poros has a glorious history in the Modern times of the Hellenic Republic. The first Naval Dock was established in 1827 just before the deliberation of Greece.
It comprised of old and private dwellings in the city of Poros that were used as store facilities for ammunition, tools and repairs. Swiss doctor Andreas Louis Gos undertook the difficult task of the initial organization. The emblem of MTC Poros depicts an anchor, a rifle crossed with a bayonet. It reflects the inner meaning of the naval and military training new recruits undergo.
The official announcement for the establishment of Poros Naval Dock was made in 1830, due to the great demands in human and technical resources.
During Otto’s reign the Naval Dock is under great improvement and plays an important role in the planning of national defense. The Naval Administration is created and is responsible for the organization of the National Navy. In 1846, the Naval Dock is officially situated on the island of Poros, ratified through presidential decree on September 9, 1846. The main building and the food hall are constructed, possibly under the design plans of Christian Hansen (est. 1846).

In 1948 it was named Military Training Camp Poros. At the same time, the Military Training Camp Palaskas was founded in the Navy facilities of Skaramangas and all Navy Schools were transferred there. Prior to this, the Camp Commander had acquired the overall surveillance of other schools: Cadets, Nurses, Training, Management, Catering and the Naval Hospital of Poros.
In February 1952, the schools of MTC Poros were transferred to Skaramangas except for the School of Nursing, which was transferred three months later. In June 1952, the School of Training was transferred to Skaramangas; the only school left in Poros was that of Cadets.
In 1957, the renowned light cruiser “AVEROF” docked at Poros and remained there until 1984 under maintenance to remind Cadets and Trainees of the naval accomplishments in the modern times of the Hellenic history and remains an inspiration for their first steps in the Hellenic Navy. The same fate awaited the destroyer “VELOS”, which culminated its actions during the anti-dictatorship struggle with the bold movement of the Officers in May 1973. After its disarmament in 1991 it was docked at MTC Poros where it was used as a museum.
After 1991, the Hellenic Navy operated MTC Poros as training camp for drafted mariners.
