The "FLYING CLIPPER" changes flag
Important Greek Shipowner gave Name to Sailing School
La Tour-de-Peilz, June 29th 1965
"Flying Clipper-once Lord Runciman's pleasure-yacht and recently the beautiful training-vessel of the Clipper Shipping Company - has changed name. The beautiful white schooner will in the future be called Eugenios Eugenides, in memory of one of Greece's Shipowners and patrons, who died some ten years ago.
An unusual ceremony took place on board the training-vessel on Friday afternooon. The Greek Ministry of Marine, who are the new owners, chiefly represented by Commander Fokas and captain P. Kotomatis, received the sellers, agents and other persons who have had anything to do with the vessel and its sale.
In fact the flag was changed, an event which meant that the ship is now definitely in Greek hands.
The guests gathered on after-deck. Captain Tore Hagstrom, who was there instead of director Einar Hansen who could not come, Consul Tore Hillerstrom, who mediated the transaction between Clipper and the Greek Government, director Granberg from the Brostrom Company, Civil engineer Egnell from Kockums, Surveyor-general of customs Josefsson, among others, listened to Commander Fokas' celebration speech in honour of the training-vessel. He also recalled the denominator's contributions to Greece and his good relations with Sweden and the Swedish people.
For yet another week the inhabitants of Malmo may enjoy the sight of Eugenios Eugenides as she lies moored in the outer part of the central harbour. But Greek sailors are already busy preparing the vessel for the passage to her new home-port Piraeus, where her duty will be mainly the same as during the time when the schooner was flying the Swedish flag. During Clipper's management hundreds of future ship's officers have received the variety of training which only a sailing vessel can give.
Unfortunately the harbour of Malmo is losing an attractive sight, but today's schooling at sea must be specialized from the beginning."
