HS PAPANIKOLIS is the first class 214 submarine which was built in the shipyards of HDW in Kiel, Germany. She was launched on April 22, 2004. The raising of the Greek flag took place on November 2, 2010 in Kiel, Germany. On November 3, 2010 submarine sailed from the port of Kiel and shipyards of HDW to the port of Kristiansand in Norway, where she arrived on November 4, 2010. Thereafter and until November 17, 2010 submarine performed numerous drills, to train onboard crew and got familiar with the material in view of the upcoming transit to Greece. On November 18, 2010, sailed from the port of Kristiansand to Kiel, Germany on November 19, 2010. On November 30, 2010 the submarine sailed from the port of Kiel and on December 21, 2010 arrived in Greece at Salamis Naval Base. HS PAPANIKOLIS after arriving in Greece, passed the Headquarters Fleet training, and is able to participate in all kinds of exercises and missions. HS PAPANIKOLIS brings one of the most advanced integrated combat system which can be used for Navigation purposes and firing / guidance of the weapons. She can use a large number of weapons and is an extremely useful first-line ship against enemy surface vessels and submarines. Her main advantage is the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology that allows her to operate without access to atmospheric oxygen (using a snorkel).
