It is a replica of the holy icon of the Virgin Mary located in the sacred pilgrimage of the diocese of Virgin Mary in the island of Tinos. The two crossing tridents with their tips extending in the background are related to the byzantine tradition, according to which Mother of God has always been the champion of the righteous fighters. The crest remained unaltered after the decommissioning of the cruiser ELLI in 1965.

  • History

HS ELLI is the first S class frigate of the Hellenic Navy. She was built by the Royal Schelde  in the Netherlands. She took her name in commemoration of the cruiser ELLI which was torpedoed and sunk on the 15th of August 1940 in the port of Tinos (participating in the festivities of the Assumption of Mary in the island), by an Italian submarine. That cruiser was named after the historic naval battle of the cape Elli in the Dardanelles, where the Hellenic Fleet defeated the Turkish one during the First Balkan War (16 December 1912). HS ELLI is the third unit baring the same name. The first one was the ex-Chinese "Fei-Hung", which was built in 1912 and purchased by the Hellenic Government in 1912. She took part in the First World War and, as previously mentioned, she was torpedoed by an Italian submarine on the 15th of August 1940. The second unit was the ex-Italian "Eugenio di Savoia", and she was given to Hellenic Government as a compensation for the sunken cruiser, in July 1950. Since 1959, ELLI served as the flagship of the Admiral Commander in Chief of Cretan Archipelago, with home port that of Souda Bay, Crete.
